SASA held its 2009 annual conference,

Making sense of borders:
Identity, Citizenship and Power in Comparative Perspective
 
in Senate House on the East campus of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg from 28 June until 2 July 2009. 
 
A total of 167 papers were presented in 50 sessions attended by 226 delegates from 10 countries.

  The keynote address was delivered by Satish Deshpande. Plenary speakers included Franco Barchiesi (Ohio State University), Ashwin Desai (UJ), Zimitri Erasmus (UCT), Zine Magubane (Boston College), Dale McKinley (CAX), Angela Mitropoulos (Melbourne-based public intellectual), Andile Mngxitama (Foundation for Human Rights), Prishani Naidoo (Wits), Michael Neocosmos (Monash) and Gay Seidman (Wisconsin).

Prof Eddie Webster and Prof Fatima Meer were honoured during the conference.
